Notes & Reviews:

Pierre Rode, the youngest member of the classical French violin school including Rodolphe Kreutzer and Pierre Baillot, composed almost exclusively for his instrument. His twenty-four Caprices en forme d'etudes first published around 1815 are doubtless his most important work for solo violin and have enjoyed the highest recognition in the historiography of violin playing. They are ordered according to the keys on the circle of fifths, not by technical aspects of violin playing. Elizabeth Wallfisch, one of the great artists in the field of historical violin performance, interprets these cantabile character pieces.
