Notes & Reviews:

Onyx Classics presents the debut recording by the remarkable Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra and their young Austrian music director Sascha Goetzel, with a disc of works that all have links with either Turkey or the Orient. Respighi's ballet Belkis, Queen of Sheba features a frenzied war dance, complete with Arab percussion. Hindemith's Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes by Carl Maria von Weber uses themes that Weber had composed for his incidental music to a play on the subject of Turandot, the Persian princess. Florent Schmitt's opulent late romantic ballet The Tragedy of Salome was lavishly praised by Stravinsky, who said, "God, how fine it is! It is one of the greatest masterpieces of modern music."

The Times
Hindemith's Symphonic Metamorphoses on Themes of Weber come with a meaty oomph that sometimes conflicts with clarity. But they are still hugely enjoyable, as is Respighi's ballet suite Belkis, Queen of Sheba. The recording is very vivid.

The Guardian
The Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic sounds a much more than competent orchestra and the three works make a colourful, well-contrasted sequence...Respighi's Belkis is the genuine rarity here...As lusciously scored as one would expect from Respighi, it is really an exercise in faux orientalism.

Gramophone Magazine
Drawing polished playing from the orchestra, Vienna-born conductor Sascha Goetzel could hardly be more persuasive in all three works, which are treated to a brilliant, well-balanced recording to match.

BBC Music Magazine
Goetzel calibrates dynamic terracing particularly deftly [in the Hindemith scherzo]...[He] also excels in Florent Schmitt's festeringly erotic Tragedy of Salome...drawing playing of hot commitment and intensity from the orchestra...a notably impressive calling-card, in a refreshingly unhackneyed choice of repertoire.
