Johann Christoph Rother: St. Matthew Passion

Album Summary

>Rothe, Johann Christoph : Matthaus-Passion, for soloists, chorus & orchestra
Conductor Ensemble

Notes & Reviews:

"It bears many of the characteristics one associates with the chorale-passions of Bach., in particular the German language and the chorale. Roeth's use of the voice, both in ensemble and in solo passages, bears stronger resemblance, though, to the operas and oratorios of Italy...

Beyond its vocal styles, the aspect I find striking about Roeth's St Matthew Passion is the use of viol consort. At a superficial level it gives the music a quality somewhat akin to contemporary English verse anthems. At a deeper level, though, I hear connections between the darker sound of these grossergiegen(large string instruments), as they were called in Germany, and the mournful material Roethe has for his text. The effect is quite clever.

The notes by Michael Maul and Steffen Voss are excellent. Recordings of music by little-known composers require more background material, and that is certainly available here. The singing and playing is of a very high quality. Everyone appears well trained in early-baroque performance practices. Tests are in German and English."-American Record Guide
