Notes & Reviews:

Ever the perfectionist, it was not until 1879 that Brahms completed his first violin sonata, which was to be aptly transcribed more than a century later for viola by the Hungarian violist Csaba Erdelyi. In 1894 the outstanding clarinettist Richard Muhlfeld inspired Brahms to compose several works, including two sonatas, published with an eye to marketability for either clarinet or viola, whose autumnal nuances admirably suit the dark-toned stringed instrument. In each, viola and piano enjoy the status of equal partners, revelling in Brahms' subtle interplay of melody, rhythm and harmony.

"Roberto Diaz has a fine list of orchestral credits in his resume...I was unprepared, though, for how beautifully and musically he plays. He has superb control of his soft playing, and his sound is simply gorgeous. He also has a talented accompanist in Jeremy Denk, who brings out some details of Brahms's writing that had escaped me in the past...A fabulous recording, even if you already have a favorite."-American Record Guide
