Notes & Reviews:

Anna Netrebko's first live solo album and first Lieder album is accompanied by star conductor/pianist Daniel Barenboim. This was the concert event of the Salzburg Festival 2009. Netrebko's all-Russian recital is accompanied by Barenboim's masterful, idiomatic playing. Anna's voluptuous voice surrenders completely to the haunting, soulful melodies of songs by Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky, and others. 'In The Still Of Night' showcases Netrebko's artistry and deep connection to art songs from her homeland. This recording is a natural follow-up to her Grammy-nominated 'Russian Album'.

"Whatever her merits, or otherwise, as a bel canto prima donna or as a French lyric coloratura in the opera house, Netrebko’s supremacy in her native song repertoire can’t be challenged today. This recital, recorded live at last year’s Salzburg festival... with no less a pianist than Barenboim, finds the Russian soprano in top vocal form. I doubt whether this repertoire has been sung with such vocal refulgence on disc since the glory days of Galina Vishnevskaya and Irina Arkhipova. Netrebko has something of Vishnevskaya’s raw brilliance of timbre, but without the fruitiness and wobble that the older singer produced in later years. She seems to have enriched and enlarged her palette of tone colours since the birth of her son. I guess she is at her absolute peak, vocally... Most of the songs, particularly Rimsky’s, will be unfamiliar, apart from the celebrated, orientalist Nightingale and the Rose, where Netrebko luxuriates in the erotic Arabian melismata. Among her Tchaikovsky selection, only Serenade and In the Middle of the Day are standard fare, but all nine songs are masterpieces. This may be new repertoire for Barenboim, but his playing is a luxury beyond price." -The Sunday Times
