On this spare, introspective, and even solemn effort overall, violinist Tobias Preisig offers cool emotions and steely resolve on a recording that is much more reserved than pronounced. Similar to an ECM album, European classical chamber music with stoic jazz patience identifies what Preisig and his quartet offer during a chilling, haunting, all-original program. Except for the lilting and brighter "Headup," a slightly more punchy "Chapter Two," and the minimalist "Hardbruecke Remembrance," the program sets a somber, mysterious tone that really does not relent or dissipate. The violinist is clearly the leader in constructing basic, languid, stretched-out legato melodies. Where pianist Stefan Rusconi is a complementary player and in the background, he mirrors the concept of Preisig with every quiet, gentle, patient step. This is rainy-day mood music for sure, to be played only when skies are gray and light is dim. Perhaps a follow-up effort will provide brighter moments from this talented transcontinental ensemble. ~ Michael G. Nastos
