Notes & Reviews:
When these recordings were made (in the 1960s), schoenberg's music was comparatively rare on record. It represented, then, the typical daring of both, the melos ensemble of london, and of the l'oiseau-lyre label for which it was originally recorded. In the extended schoenberg serenade, the melos ensemble of london was joined for one of the movements by baritone john carol case. All recordings are released on cd for the first time.
The performance [of the Serenade] here emerges superbly on this, its first appearance on CD. Indeed, it is nothing less than dazzling in its sharply vivid brilliance, and it does much to help one accept the argument. John Carol Case does wonders with the cruel vocal line.
