Notes & Reviews:

Recording information: Studio Acoust, Paris / Studio Ferber, Paris.

As might be expected, Bruno Coulais' score for the film Babies, which follows the early adventures of four babies of different cultures and races, has a childlike feel. The rhythms are bouncy and gentle, strings are plucked gingerly, and two female voices, those of Rosemary Standley and Alice Lewis, sing engaging nonsense syllables as if trying to entertain pre-verbal toddlers. (All of this follows Sufjan Stevens' pop/rock track "The Perpetual Self, or `What Would Saul Alinsky Do?,'" which has a fuzzy, lo-fi sound as if mixed and mastered for MP3 compression.) The result is an album that would not be out of place playing in the nursery during naptime. ~ William Ruhlmann
