Notes & Reviews:

"I enjoy this installment in the New Zealand Quartet's Mendelssohn cycle as much as I liked the first volume that has Quartets 1, 4, and 6. Again, the tempo choices and balances are excellent, and everything in the music is crystal clear, even in the very difficult trio of II in the Third Quartet. These musicians make the music exciting not by superimposing an artificial interpretation on it, but rather by bringing out so beautifully what is already there."-American Record Guide

"The New Zealand String Quartet completes its impressive Mendelssohn recordings for Naxos back at the beginning with this Opus "0" work, played with the same style and devotion it brings to the maturer Quartet in D major, Op 44, No 1. Such warm, intelligent playing makes this three-volume series one to recommend." -The Observer

Mendelssohn String Quartets vol 3, New Zealand String Quartet, Naxos 8.570003
The New Zealand String Quartet is to be congratulated for an outstanding recording of Volume 3 of the Mendelssohn String Quartets. I found the quality, interpretations, and tempos, particularly of the Op. 44/1, very much to my liking and equal or better than other recordings. In my opinion, many groups try to show that they can play Mendelssohn faster than the next group; thereby, they often lose some of the melodic beauty inherent in Mendelssohn's chamber music. Thanks to a combination of several factors, this group manages to keep these elements in excellent proportion. On the basis of this disc, I predict that the other volumes of this series should be equally rewarding. It is a worthy addition to one's music library. Ted Wilks
