Notes & Reviews:

This disc of music for cello and piano by Shostakovich juxtaposes two disparate styles. The tumultuous and virtuoso sonata of Opus 40, still influenced by Tchaikovsky and Miaskovsky, is emblematic of his youth. The second, a transcription of his very last score, the Opus 147 Sonata for viola, is a Winterreise-like journey through the composer's memories, ending with an homage to Beethoven. This crepuscular work blends in direct musical quotations with parodical, sometimes even derisory, associations. Here, for the first time, it is played on the cello in its original tessitura.
