Notes & Reviews:

It was only many years after the sudden death of his sixteen-year-old son Alfred that Foerster reflected musically on this painful loss. He composed his fifth symphony as an instrumental requiem and occupied himself with it intensively for five years until its premiere on his seventieth birthday on November 2,1929. Foerster wandered over the Giant Mountains several times during his youth and experienced nature in its pristine state. He incorporated his experiences into the symphonic poem In the Mountains. It is hardly surprising that masters such as Grieg, Tchaikovsky, and Dvorak emphatically endorsed him in his wish to become a composer.
