Notes & Reviews:

The great Brazilian cellist Antonio Meneses extends his fruitful association with Avie with his sixth release and first concerto recording for the label. Directing the Northern Sinfonia from the cello, Meneses pairs the two classic Haydn concerti with a world premiere by his compatriot Clovis Pereira.

"Meneses' approach to the Haydn concerto is wonderfully simple and straightforward. He cleanly executes precisely what is in the score without the unnecessary need to embellish or mar with excessive rubato. Though his right arm might be seen by some as too heavy in the frequent chords in the C major's first movement, the nimble, light stroke he achieves in the third movements will leave listeners clambering for the repeat button. The D major concerto is played with a similar level of elegance and energy. Rounding out the disc is the unusual addition of the Brazilian composer Clovis Pereira's Concerto for cello and string orchestra. Paying homage to the Baroque and the influence that period's music has had on other composers in the region, the Pereira concerto is a nice counterpart to the well-known Haydn concertos." - All Music Guide

BBC Music Magazine
Meneses delivers warm and technically flawless accounts of the Haydn C major and D major supported by an enthusiastic 0and full-blooded contribution from the Northern Sinfonia...Playing of such a high calibre is fully worthy of comparison with the strongest rivals

Gramophone Magazine
Meneses isn't daunted [by the D major concerto]...he doesn't overlook the importance of clarifying the richer orchestral textures while giving the viola lines their due...Haydn's intellectual and emotional discernment is here on a different plane [from the C major concerto] and Meneses's consummately played interpretation reflects the difference.

Sunday Times
Meneses takes his place alongside the greats in these now familiar concertos with his beautiful tone... and mercurial temperament in the C major's allegro molto. The Northern Sinfonia are willing accomplices in urbane, genial performances that would grace any collection.
