Notes & Reviews:

Three symphonies by Boccherini comprise the latest edition in the 'Contemporaries of Mozart' series. These symphonies are not well known and are seldom recorded. Born in Lucca in 1743, Boccherini was one of the greatest cellists of his time. He travelled all over Europe, giving virtuoso performances, and only became known as a composer when he took up permanent residence at the court of the Infante Don Luis in Spain. Two of the three symphonies in this recording were composed for Don Luis in 1771 while No. 21 was written for King Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia in 1786. Boccherini composed about thirty symphonies but is best known for his chamber music. As with the other discs in this successful long-running series Matthias Bamert conducts the London Mozart Players.

"Unlike many modern chamber orchestras, the London Mozart Players make small attempt to sound like a period band, being content to be what they are and concentrate on playing this music with the warm affection it needs...the essential Boccherinian spirit is there." -Gramophone Magazine

"The London Mozart Players's strings are outstanding." -BBC Music Magazine *****
