Notes & Reviews:

Shortly before he undertook his last concert tour to America, the freelance concert organist Marco Enrico Bossi received encouragement from his friend Puccini: "They will get to hear how the organ really should be played!" This disc presents a selection of Bossi's remarkable organ music, from intimate character pieces to thrilling works in the grand manner, which show his debt to Cesar Franck, the great German symphonic tradition and Claude Debussy's exotic tone colourings, all filtered through Bossi's unique artistic sensibility.

Impressionistic Organ
This disc consists of a theme and variations, 5 larger works, and the KonzertStuck in C minor, Op. 130a, which was for this listener the center piece of this recording. The theme itself is simple and easy to digest, while variation 5 goes right for the bass register, contrasting both the lower and higher ends of the organ’s range, while variation 8 stays with the higher end almost exclusively. Variation 9 initially shows off the trumpet register of the organ, but quickly descends into lower octaves to provide a more overall balanced sound of the kind that only an organ can produce. The Hora mystica begins with the kind of wide ranging sustained sound that only an organ can produce, majestic and powerful. This gives way to a high sequence of reverent tones that end up being gently supported by the lower registers of the instrument. The Piece Heroique begins with a 4 note motif that works its way up and down the keyboard while being accompanied by a series of powerful tones in the bass. The Hora gaudiosa (“Hour of Joy”) certainly communicates its mood early, with uplifting chords and progressions that leave no doubt as to the celebratory intent of the piece. As to the Konzertstuck in C minor, it is a somewhat impressionistic and (in some places) atonal work, generating an ominous querying feeling. The 3rd movement (Meno allegro) has moderately dissonant, although not unpleasant music that strongly conveys the “new explorer’s unease” series of emotions. And the last piece, Colloquio colle rondini (Colloquy with the swallows) is a relatively calm and sedate piece that tends to stay in the middle section of the organ, conveying a circular repetitive series of tones near the end. If you like the music of Cesar Franck and the tonal works of Claude Debussy, then this disc might be just what the doctor ordered. Another fine, off-the-beaten-path offering from Naxos.
