Three Great Performances
This recording of concerti keeps the listener interested. Sebastian Manz’ clarinet displays a variety of voices appropriate to Mozart’s music. Manz maneuvers between loud and soft dynamic and between dance-like and legato gestures with great style. Emmanuel Ceysson plays angelically on the harp in Reinhold Gliere’s harp concerto, especially in the virtuosic sections of the third movement (Allegro giocoso). The ensemble and soloist take turns, weaving in and out of the spotlight gracefully. The opening of Korngold’s violin concerto displays Hyeyoon Park’s musicality, feeling, and velvet tone quality. What lovely pieces by Korngold! All of the playing is superb, and the recording quality is top-notch; one might not even guess this is a live recording until you hear the beginning of the applause at the end of each concerto. I do find it strange that Mozart was programmed with the other two more Romantic and modern composers. However, the order of pieces seems to flow well, resulting in a balanced performance that progresses naturally. An overall wonderful recording.
