Notes & Reviews:

'Gypsic' is the very first recording of violinist Sarah Nemtanu who brings a subtle touch of Balkanese extravagance to classical masterpieces from Ravel and Enesco. Sarah Nemtanu is one of today's leading violinists and her career to date commands respect, including being first violin solo with the Orchestre National de France and having performed with many of the most renowned orchestras in the world. For this ambitious recording, the Romanian-born violinist chose to perform pieces from the classical repertoire in arrangements bringing out their Balkan fibre. This is a very 'gypsic' recording in between music and rhythmic, a surprising mixture, impressive in its respect and precision, and delightful in its insubordination to form and genre. The biggest challenge on this album was undoubtedly to rework the Blues from Maurice Ravel's Violin Sonata, inspired here by rhythmic ethio-jazz, a blend of jazz and the traditional music of Ethiopian azmari minstrels.

Lovely...
Sarah Nemtanu mixes many genres, from traditional Hungarian to modern French to Ethiopian popular styles, on this very interesting recording. Here we find pieces transcribed for unexpected instruments, such as the lutheal. These pieces are inspired by the mystic and rustic gypsy cultures, and as a result, the recording carries hints of melancholic and triumphant moods throughout. The Czardas by Monti is excellently performed. Nemtanu draws a wonderfully heartfelt quality from her violin, and the ensemble gels together even through difficult tempo changes. In fact, the instruments seem to be connected as they change tempi through the entire recording. Nemtanu is very sensitive, accessing numerous “voices” and feelings from her violin. With musicianship like this, who needs words? This is a lovely CD which will be played often in my home!
