Notes & Reviews:

It is only in recent years that the significance of the full range of the artistry of the important Swiss musician Volkmar Andreae has come to be recognized outside of the interest of specialists. This recording joins an earlier release on Guild (GUI 7307) of Andreae's piano trios.

"The Swiss composer Volkmar Andreae made his reputation primarily as a conductor and a champion of Bruckner. But his own music, which is of high quality, brings an individual harmonic language, traditional in the best sense, the writing beautifully crafted with a consistently appealing melodic flow...Undoubtedly, the Locrian Ensemble fully understand Andreae's musical style in these relaxed yet ardent performances. Their playing is balanced by refined intensity which prevents any sagging of lyrical feeling, so that the listener is consistently held in their spontaneous response to the music. The recording throughout, in a warm acoustic, is ideal, with excellent clarity, yet creating a fine ambient glow, so necessary in the quartets. There are excellent notes from Robert Mathew-Walker. Well worth investigating." - Gramophone. "The Locrian Ensemble of London deliver superb performances of all three quartets, again making a strong case for his music." - Classical Lost and Found

"Flutist Anna Noakes and the Lochrian Ensemble make an excellent case for these well-crafted works, and are provided with a resonant acoustic that emphasizes the quasi -fin de siècle Vienna nostalgic warmth, at once both carefree and yet slightly bittersweet. If not masterpieces of the first rank, these are all engaging works of real substance that will bring both enjoyment and profit to lovers of late-Romantic chamber music, and are accordingly recommended."-Fanfare
