Notes & Reviews:

Russian Masterpieces, a twofer by ZYX Music, presents all of its Russian classical pieces on the first CD, and provides a second disc that is an assortment of traditional folk melodies and pieces by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Grieg, and other non-Russian composers, played on folk instruments. If one regards the second disc as a bonus item, then the first may satisfy casual listeners who want a taste of Russian orchestral music. Included are pieces by Glinka, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Glazunov, Shostakovich, Rimsky-Korsakov, Borodin, Rubinstein, and Lyadov, and most of the selections are excerpts from famous ballets. With the exception of the opening track, which was recorded in 1973, the recordings on the first disc date from the 1990s, while the second disc offers tracks made in the 1970s and 1980s. For the most part, the sound is decent and adequate for background music. ~ Blair Sanderson
