"You'd expect so much languorous beauty to become cloying, but Takemitsu (like his mentor Debussy) has the taut discipline of the true sensualist, and knows just when to stop. And he's wonderfully served by the performances, which search for the expressiveness in the music rather than dwelling on its fastidious beauties - though they too are there, caught in a beautifully clear and glowing recording. - BBC Music Magazine (on Takemitsu: My Way Of Life)
The Vienna Philharmonic has a natural, noble claim to Strauss's Alpine territory; and yet it has exercised it all too rarely. Doubts as to whether Seiji Ozawa was the right man to lead this orchestra to the summit quickly vanishes in the light of their free and easy progress from darkest night to a broad, richly perspectived sunrise... Usually the listener is impatient to reach the heart of the epilogue; with rare, unforced tenacity, Ozawa makes us listen to the craggier beauties just before it, and he never hurries over the onlookers' generous-spirited rhapsodies to nature earlier in the work... The final bars are as disquieting as I've ever heard them. -BBC Music Magazine (on Strauss: Alpensinfonie)
"Previous recordings of this orchestral crystallization have been too aggressive for my ear, but Ozawa is marvelously refined, yet he does not lose the music's inherent vitality. The lyrical sections are warmly done to remind us that there are still heart-stirring melodies being written." -Gramophone (on Bernstein: West Side Story - Symphonic Dances)
"Seiji Ozawa (with the Berlin Philharmonic at their glossiest) offers a studio approach to Tchaikovsky that's big-boned and transatlantically Romantic in spirit...there's much that's detailed, well-focused and honestly accountable. 1812 is finely imagined, a cantering scenario of pomp and circumstance with a welcome touch of seriousness." -BBC Music Magazine (on Tchaikovsky: Symphony no 5)
