Notes & Reviews:

The Treaty of Utrecht signed in 1713 brought an end to almost two centuries of worldwide warfare. This was the first peace achieved through diplomacy, with special thanks to the hospitality of Utrecht. The event was celebrated with music, festive fireworks and specially commissioned compositions such as the Utrecht Te Deum and Utrecht Jubilate by George Frideric Handel and the Ode for the Peace of Utrecht by William Croft. These three jubilant works receive glowing performances from the Netherlands Bach Society led by Jos van Veldhoven.

"The Netherlands Bach Society proves their mettle time and time again."-Audiophile Audition

"The sound, from the Philharmonie, Haarlem in The Netherlands, exemplifies Channel Classics' typically superior production work, in both SACD and standard CD formats. This is a program that's not only a pleasure to listen to, but it's intelligently, purposefully designed... here on this CD we have our own little celebration, not only a musical treat but, in my case at least, a prompt to research some European history--not on the program but well worth the effort. Highly recommended!" -ClassicsToday (10/10)

"This is another demonstration of the work of Van Veldhoven and his fine choral and period instrument ensembles...This release is worthwhile for the Handel, but it is the 'filler'- all of 31 minutes that really attracts the attention...an ode composed for a celebration at Oxford...a piece full of lovely melody, of enjoyable, if slightly retrospective, and very satisfying music performed here...Let us hope this newly discovered ode by Croft will help us put him more securely on the musical map. For my money, his contribution to this release makes it even more worth investigating than Handel's music."-American Record Guide

"...the performances, with Jos van Veldhoven conducting the Netherlands Bach Society, are terrific...the fires of political and humanitarian justice still blaze in the majesty of the choral singing and the elation of the playing." -The Guardian *****

"The instrumental performance is airy, the choral singing sturdy and joyous, while William Towers and Peter Harvey beguile in Croft's duet on a ground bass, "Peace Is the Song"." -The Independent

"Jos van Veldhoven's excellent Dutch musicians are joined by a team of mostly English soloists...The Netherlands Bach Society fires on all cylinders in the Jubilate...The choir handles lively counterpoint intuitively...Contrasts between penitent intimacy and and colourful magnificence are managed shrewdly by Veldhoven." -Gramophone Magazine
