Notes & Reviews:

Inspired by Rachmaninov's Vespers and the great anthems written for the Russian Orthodox Church, Shchedrin composed The Sealed Angel, a Russian liturgy scored for mixed choir, soloists, two boy's voices and flute, in 1988. Based on sacred texts and an 1872 short story by Nikolai Leskov, it tells the tale of a group of people in 18th-century Russia who belonged to a sect called the Old Believers. Leskov's text is read to the audience interspersed with nine choral anthems and the solo flute represents the spirit of a holy icon that is central to the story. On this new recording, Maris Sirmais leads the Latvian State Choir in a particularly moving performance of a remarkable work.
