Notes & Reviews:

CPO's top house ensemble, the Singphoniker, have also prepared a tribute to Schumann on the occasion of the two hundredth anniversary of his birth. Schumann wrote five cycles for male voices, and three of them are settings of politically progressive texts from the Young Germany circle and thus of course related to the Revolution of 1848. For example, the poet of the five Hunting Songs op. 147, Heinrich Laube, was a cofounder of this group and frequently in prison because of his liberal stance and political activity as a member of a student society - but also a member of the parliament that met in St. Paul's Church. Schumann sympathized with these ideas, and male choir seemed to be just the right formation for articulating them. Male song assumed moral values from patriotic commitment and resistance to the Restoration that lent it the character of a popular musical movement. Schumann's songs, however, never cheer on the power of the people with raised fist. For the Singphoniker these are "relaxed moments of the deepest meditation - marvelously peppy song - a whirlwind of unrest challenging - an unsettlingly challenging whirlwind of unrest."
