Notes & Reviews:

In 1931 the pianist and muse Harriet Cohen invited all her principal composer friends each to make an arrangement of a work by J S Bach for inclusion in an album to be published by Oxford University Press. Published as A Bach Book for Harriet Cohen, it is recorded here for the first time by virtuoso pianist Jonathan Plowright. The disc is completed by eight other 20th century British Bach transcriptions. Featured composers include Bantock, Bax, Howells, Vaughan Williams and Walton.

'Every so often a CD comes along that I simply can't stop playing. Here's one such example ... Glorious interpretations by Jonathan Plowright' (The Observer)

'There are some gems here ... This is an invaluable addition to Hyperion's Bach Piano Transcriptions series and Plowright has done us an enormous service in resurrecting these transcriptions and in rendering them so eloquently' (International Record Review)

'Jonathan Plowright plays everything with calm, unforced assurance, nicely balancing Bach style and 1930s period manners, and making light of all the left-hand skips needed to suggest Bach's organ pedal parts. An immaculate recording and Calum MacDonald's detailed notes enhance the disc's appeal' (BBC Music Magazine)

"Volume 9 in Hyperion's always enlightening and highly entertaining Bach Piano Transcriptions series gives us the arranging efforts of 18 British composers through the considerable pianistic talents of Jonathan Plowright...I firmly believe that Bach wrote some of the most expressive music ever composed and that the near - perfect modern instrument to project that music is the piano. Since Bach himself transcribed many works by other composers and reused his own music in different guises, no one can object to any honest, musical transcription of his music. I have a feeling that nine volumes have only scratched the surface of what is out there. As long as Hyperion enlists the abilities of pianists like Plowright, this series will continue to be most enjoyable."-American Record Guide
