Notes & Reviews:

CPO is now finally able to continue the Weingartner edition - this time with chamber music, which for him occupied the same high importance in his extensive oeuvre as did his orchestral music. The Quartet No. 5 and the String Quintet op. 40 again show us Weingartner as a composer of authority, taste, and high talent. The quartet spreads out before us a constant series of surprises even though the formal means of the four-movement work had long belonged to his standard repertoire. The quintet is also very versatile and exhibits a colossal intensity in what is its almost entirely thematic motivic fabric. "But this is just the way he was, our hero with a thousand faces," as our text author Eckhardt van den Hoogen writes. Weingartner's works rich in ideas and imagination have repeatedly been interpreted by the Swiss Sarastro Quartet, which is able "with its eminent musicianship, flawless formal intuition, and capability at every moment convincingly and captivatingly to convey Weingartner's musical communications to the listener" (Klassik heute 7/08 of Vol. 1).
