Notes & Reviews:

Beethoven has always been a part of the concert repertoire of exclusive Chandos artist Louis Lortie, and it rose again to the top of his agenda as he prepared to complete his recorded cycle of the composer's sonatas earlier this year. Sonatas Nos 22, 23, 24, 25, 27, 30, 31 and 32, newly recorded, will be released for the first time as part of a box set of the entire canon, which will be available at the bargain price of 9 CDs for the price of 3. This box set of the complete piano sonatas is a must for all lovers of Beethoven and great piano playing. The compositions are bold and beautiful, challenging, witty and fresh. They seem to encompass all aspects of human sensibility and aspiration, and the superb playing of Louis Lortie takes the music to another level.

"With this nine-CD box, Louis Lortie completes his cycle of Beethoven's 32 sonatas, adding an inspired eight sonatas to those already recorded. During the interim his playing has become ever more rich and reflective. Time and again a faultless pianistic sheen and mastery are allied to the finest musical perception. Here, surely, is vital and living proof that you can maintain an individual and distinctive voice while remaining scrupulously true to the composer. In the Op 54 Sonata's teasingly enigmatic Allegretto finale you note playfulness and poise, a far cry from, say, Richter's manic presto chase. Lortie's Op 57, too, is surely among the most musicianly of all Appassionatas. Nothing is forced or rushed, everything is subtly nuanced and phrased beneath an outwardly urbane surface. What poetic grace, what an ear for translucent, perfectly balanced textures in the first movement of Op 78! In Op 79 Lortie creates an unforgettable still centre at the heart of so much bustle and caprice, while in Op 90 the endlessly evolving, superficially Mendelssohnian finale emerges in an almost trance-like state, all previous storms and passions erased as if by magic.

But it is in the last three sonatas that Lortie achieves his absolute zenith. In Op 109 a romantic haze seems to hang across the music, but never at the expense of drive (try Variation 3 from the third movement) or lucidity. Few pianists have achieved a greater sense of speculation in Op 110's Adagio and Arioso dolente, while in the concluding variations of Op 111 the critic can only abandon paper and pencil and listen in a rapt state of wonder. Here, the last pages truly "drift towards the shores of Paradise" (Edward Sackville-West) and lesser pianists can only marvel at an artist who creates such a profound sense of beauty, equilibrium and serenity (the hardest of all virtues in today's chaotic world). These are performances to treasure and revisit and Chandos's immaculate sound and presentation are a crowning touch. "-Grammophon

"Lortie seems less interested in metaphysical profundity than in textural stylishness; spending enough time with this set to grasp Lortie's aims and insights is nevertheless genuinely rewarding" -BBC Music Magazine ****
