Notes & Reviews:
Love and jealousy are feelings that have always moved human hearts, and in this particular case a blue sash and a flower presented to the gallant, go-getting Enrico by two veiled ladies set in motion a turbulent lovers' drama. August Wilhelm Schlegel translated Calderón's cloak-and-dagger comedy into German in 1803, when the public was just beginning to develop a great interest in Spanish romantic literature. E. T. A. Hoffmann, this time as a composer, selected Schlegel's text for a singspiel in 1807 but was unable to see it through to stage production during his lifetime. It was regarded as lost for over 150 years, until an edition of the score in the German State Library in Berlin and Hoffmann's original libretto in the Würzburg City Archive were found. The singspiel is now extant in the form intended by Hoffmann. In cooperation with the Ludwigsburg Castle Festival, CPO is now presenting the premiere of 'Liebe und Eifersucht' (Love and Jealousy) exactly 201 years after its composition. Hoffmann wrote it for a typical "Mozart orchestra" and shows in it not only his great love for Mozart but also his profound knowledge of his music. Together with 'Undine' this singspiel certainly ranks as this great romantic writer's most important musical work.
there's a zippy and tuneful overture, and the set numbers have undoubted appeal...the original-instrument orchestra captures the period atmosphere under Michael Hofstetter. This can certainly be recommended to anyone with a taste for unpretentious and undemanding operatic rarities of its era.
