For centuries the legend of the golem, a clay figure resembling a human being that inspired the original Frankenstein story and was set to music 1926 by Eugen d'Albert. The Beethoven Orchestra of Bonn and the Bonn Theater Chorus presented his opera on the stage under the conductor Stefan Blunier in early 2010 - a rarity that MDG includes in their "Live" series!

The story behind the drama is set in the Prague ghetto during the sixteenth century. Rabbi Loew is supposed to have dug up the golem from the loamy soil on the banks of the Moldau and to have employed mystical rituals to endow him with life. The golem was to obey his master's commands in silence and to protect the ghetto inhabitants during pogroms. Lea, the Rabbi's foster daughter, however, teaches the golem to speak, and Lea and the golem fall in love. When the Rabbi separates the couple, the golem flies into a violent rage - all of which offers excellent material for a magnificent music drama.

Der Golem is one of the twenty-one operas penned by Eugène d'Albert. He used big sound and an eruptive musical idiom with a touch of the poetic here and there to set this action-packed tale from his late period. The score offers a rich color spectrum ranging from tender, bright, supernaturally sensuous tones to dark, deep, mystical shadings.

It is a piece well worth exploration... There is a good deal of Strauss in Der Golem... which is excellent and handled with Straussian verve by Stefan Blunier... Ingeborg Greiner is excellent as Lea, touching but also convincing in the highly abnormal situation... Mark Marouse has an equally difficult task... and deals with it affectingly
