Notes & Reviews:

From converting to Catholicism to turning to Italian Opera, Johann Christian Bach was considered the "black sheep" of the arch-Protestant Bach family. Prior to his brilliant career as opera composer and impresario in London (1757-60), he held the position of organist at the Milan Cathedral. During this period he composed numerous sacred works, the least well-known of his works. Gerhard Jenemann, Joanne Lunn, Thomas E. Bauer, Süddeutsche Kammerchor & Concerto Köln bring these works to life.

Gramophone Magazine
Concerto Köln play with gentler finesse than one would expect from their directorless orchestral recordings: woodwind colorations and horns are subtle and the strings are relaxed. Gerhard Jenemann conjures soft yet precise choral singing from the South German Chamber Choir.

International Record Review
All four soloists are well chosen to balance tonally with the period instruments of the orchestra...one of the most attractive features of these works, and one which these performances really bring out, is Christian's inventive orchestral writing...First-rate performances all round.

MusicWeb International
The choir comprises just 17 voices, and sings with power and passion. Concerto Köln is in excellent form - better than I have recently heard from this ensemble - and the solo parts are given immaculate performances. So there is every reason to recommend this disc, which, it is to be hoped, will contribute to a more equitable assessment of Johann Christian Bach's oeuvre.
