Notes & Reviews:

Roland Hayes’s repertoire of lieder ranged from Dowland and Monteverdi to Schubert, Beethoven and Mozart, from Debussy and Wolf all the way to Villa-Lobos. While he sang arias in concerts, he was excluded from the opera stage because of the resistance to interracial casting. This most famous of early black singers was giving more than 80 concerts a year by 1924, frequently with major orchestras like Boston and Philadelphia. Coming from a background of poverty, he rose to become successful not only musically but also financially. This 2-CD set was originally released by Vanguard Records.
