Album Summary
Conductor Ensemble ComposerNotes & Reviews:
If one believes an anecdote from the early 1790s, it was with his oratorio Die Schöpfung (The Creation) that Haydn, in the autumn of his years, hoped to perpetuate his fame for posterity - even though he was already the most celebrated composer in Europe. Not surprisingly, the work's first public performance in 1799 was a huge triumph. A sequel to his highly acclaimed recording of Die Jahreszeiten (The Seasons), this set finds René Jacobs and his handpicked cast of soloists on top form. Previously released in a limited edition package with a bonus DVD, Jacobs' Creation is a definitive performance that is not to be missed.

"Throughout Jacobs is alert to the music's detail, to harmonic significance and sense of movement, and there are some delightful small cadenza-like flourishes from his fortepiano continuo the RIAS Chamber Choir is notable for its consistent refinement of tone. The scale of singing of all three soloists matches well with that of the performance as a whole." -BBC Music Magazine
"The RIAS Chamber Choir are unfailingly responsive, singing with fresh, well-knit tone, and real élan in the big celebratory choruses. for exhilaration, graphic characterisation, not least from the delicious period woodwind, and a Haydnesque sense of joy, this superbly recorded new Creation (the choral/instrument balance perfectly judged), is at least a match for the fine, comparably scaled period-instrument performances from Gardiner and Harnoncourt." -Gramophone
"Haydn’s Creation, part-inspired by Handel’s oratorios and sung here in German, represents the summit of his achievement. At least, that’s how it seems in this glorious performance. Jacobs, directing the Freiburger Barokorchester and RIAS Kammerchor, underlines Haydn’s purity of vision and wealth of dramatic characterisation, without letting stylistic correctness get in the way of the music. Johannes Weisser, Maximilian Schmitt and Julia Kleiter are the fresh-voiced soloists." -Financial Times
"With the exemplary period-instrument musicians of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra at his disposal, Jacobs revels in Haydn’s vibrant writing. From the explosive opening of the Representation of Chaos...to the graphic depictions of churning oceans, roaring lions, leaping tigers and swarming insects, few recordings bring the score to life so vividly." -BBC
