Notes & Reviews:

Cellist Zuill Bailey's Bach Cello Suites was a sleeper bestseller in 2010 and he is following up with another stellar release. This time Baily teams up with longtime pianist and collaborator Awadagin Pratt, for an all-Brahms recording. Their partnership has been hailed by the Saginaw News as "engaging their two instruments in conversation... both speaking clearly, articulately and passionately," Zuill and Awadagin perform Brahms' Sonatas for Cello and Piano Nos. 1 and 2, in Sonatensatz and five songs on this Spring 2011 recording.

"They perform several of Brahms's longer pieces for cello and piano, as well as several shorter songs transcribed for the instruments. The compositions cover most of Brahms's career and explore his varied temperaments, with the two players adapting their style impeccably to each occasion... The disc ends with Brahms's famous Wiegenlied ("Lullaby," 1868). You wouldn't think so familiar a tune could sound so fresh, but these fellows make it come to life once more in a most affecting manner. It concludes the program sweetly and gently--ironically, on the freshest of all possible levels." -Classical Candor

"From the listing of works it's tempting to think of this release as a Brahms cello sonatas disc with a bunch of filler material. But hearing the soothing strains of the opening Lerchengesang you get the sense of a well-planned program. Yes, the sonatas are the meat of this meal, and Zuill Bailey and Awadagin Pratt offer robust performances of both. They project the sombre, autumnal quality of the E minor's (Sonata No. 1) first movement without letting it slip into lugubriousness, while sustaining a lively energy throughout the remaining two movements (with fiery playing from both musicians in the challenging finale)... as an experience of the variety and beauty of Brahms' music for these instruments, this Telarc recording is both intriguing and satisfying. Recommended." -ClassicsToday

"Pratt's playing is marvelously intricate, supple, and sensitive; Bailey tones down his often bravura playing and gives a performance filled with velvety, dark tone colors. Fast forward two decades to the Second Sonata, a work that is scored much higher in the cello's register and exploits both instruments virtuosic capabilities, and Bailey and Pratt are still spot-on in their balance and transparency of playing. Even listeners who have heard these sonatas 100 times will find something new and worthwhile on this Telarc disc." -All Music Guide

Gramophone Magazine
[In the E minor Cello Sonata] the flexibility of tempo sounds totally natural and unforced...with his nut-brown tones in the lower registers of the cello, I hope for many more recordings of Romantic music from him.
