Notes & Reviews:

During the eighteenth century Hamburg was a relatively secure and peaceful city. Since the attack of the Danes in 1666 nobody had posed a serious threat to it. The city could thus indulge in a certain amount of laxity when it came to readiness for defense but nevertheless maintained a civic guard in which every Hamburg resident had to serve for a period of time. The officers of this civic guard were known as captains; and if they were not engaged in defense, then they held a gala festive banquet every year, the convivium. The banquet included festive music consisting of a sacred oratorio and a secular cantata. These festive compositions for the captains were known as 'Kapitänsmusiken', and Georg Philipp Telemann, the city’s musical potentate, wrote thirty-six such works. Only nine of them survive, and it would be missing the mark to dismiss them as mere "occasional works". For Telemann they were a field for experimentation and an opportunity to display his artistry revealing all the facets of his almost eerily vast and varied oeuvre. The 'Kapitänsmusik' of 1738 exhibits an especially rich instrumentation, perhaps also because in May of the same year, during a Paris stay, Telemann had celebrated what ranks as his greatest triumph.

International Record Review
Max manages all with stylistic fluency, well-judged tempos and effective pacing...Veronika Winter, Cornelia Samuelis and Jan Kobow make fine, dependable contributions...String playing is lively and supportive
