Notes & Reviews:

Vol. 3 demonstrates once again that Bernhard Molique’s string quartets are masterpieces on the cusp between classicism and romanticism. His Quartet No. 1 op. 16 in the serene and amicable key of G major displays not only an amicable regularity and serene nobility – at times we may think that Joseph Haydn stands before us – but also a peppy frolicsomeness and lightness with surprising modulations and expressively unfolding melodies – sometimes melancholy and profoundly emotional but never lapsing into sentimentality. The Quartet op. 17 following in Molique’s work catalogue is instead more of a manly virile character and begins with an optimistic, life-affirming thematic entry. The Mannheim String Quartet shows once again that it is a formation "enabling the scores to radiate in the best light" (FonoForum of Vol. 1).
