Notes & Reviews:

In August Klughardt we once again encounter one of the composers who set the pace in the musical everyday of the nineteenth century along with the two great B’s (Brahms and Bruckner), making memorable contributions to music history and certainly not meriting his fate of complete oblivion. Draeseke, Herzogenberg, Raff, Reinecke: they were independent artistic personalities who very much created their individual tone but without ever setting standards. And it is precisely this individual tone that CPO has set out to trace, and the results have always proved to be rewarding. And they have now come to Klughardt: born in Dessau, he also spent most of his career as the court music director in this city. He was a great admirer of Wagner and performed the entire Ring cycle in Dessau in 1893. His own music is less Wagnerian than one might think. His third symphony in particular continues more in the tradition of Schubert and Viennese classicism – and this is music full of swing and vitality! His violin concerto, performed very frequently during his lifetime, is a genuine find, and CPO was very fortunate to find an enthusiastic supporter for it in the soloist Mirjam Tschopp.
