Notes & Reviews:
Igor Markevitch's original works, which have been hailed as among the most youthful compositions of their time, have been released to critical acclaim by Naxos. Markevitch outdoes Webern's famous orchestration of the six-part Ricercare by arranging J. S. Bach's entire Musical Offering for three orchestral groups and solo quartet. 'Expressive performance... a very valuable addition to the series' (International Record Review)
Igor Markevitch's fascinating and surprising orchestration of Bach's Musical Offering may escape the notice of Bach collectors because it's presented here as Vol. 8 in the complete works of Markevitch. It's also interesting that this arrangement dates from 1949 - 50, by which time Markevitch had completely given up composing original music.
