- Kimmo Pohjonen (Accordion)
Notes & Reviews:
"Uniko is like an ocean tide coming in. Big waves of sound build in complexity, animation and sometimes sheer frenzy..." - The New York Times + * UNIKO features Grammy winning Kronos Quartet together with a Finnish duo, accordion adventurer Kimmo Pohjonen and sampling guru Samuli Kosminen. + * Produced by Iceland's Valgeir Sigurðsson - known for his collaboration with Björk - this album has been recorded at Avatar Studios in NYC. +* UNIKO was commissioned by Kronos in 2003 and premièred live at the Helsinki Festival in 2004. It has subsequently drawn sellout audiences in Moscow, Molde (Norway), and New York at the 2007 BAM NEXT WAVE Festival. +* UNIKO is highlighted by Pohjonen's electrified and MIDI-fied accordion with Kosminen's electronic percussion devices which reproduce his own accordion samples and his samples of Kronos' instruments. These samples, together with live strings and electric accordion plus effects and manipulations create a new, multi-dimensional sound world.
A far cry from the Finnish tradition, even if you feel the wave Nordic wind effect, the time stops in the vastness. Little is closest to the classical string quartet, even though the resonance of sound, density, high drama, intimate moments and contrasts strongly tinged stamps in the creation. But we absorb all this in an art of synthesis in which the instruments are played or sampled, are coupled or fight with electronics, set the pace or blend into arrhythmia. It shows a very creative record of great depth.
American Record Guide
It is atmospheric music - moody and perhaps nautical, most certainly difficult to categorize. It is worthwhile music and bears repeated listening. The Kronos Quartet performs with much energy and camaraderie, as usual.
