Notes & Reviews:

The Beethoven Orchestra of Bonn now performs a Bruckner symphony that is only rarely heard and really should no longer exist. The composer "annulled" this work instead of destroying it and later even willed it to the Linz Regional Museum. This Symphony in D minor was first performed posthumously in 1924 on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of Bruckner's birth. This symphony without a number was actually the second symphony by the devout Anton Bruckner, who grew up in the Catholic country milieu of Upper Austria. We do not know precisely what it was that led him to reject this symphony.

International Record Review
Throughout, the playing of the Beethoven Orchestra confirms its recent inclusion in the first league of German ensemblesà This remains an account that Brucknerians ought to acquire and they will be further rewarded by Blunier's skilful handling of the four orchestral pieces.

How welcome it is to see more peripheral pieces given such authoritative performances in the new medium [SACD] as Bruckner's early 'Nullte' Symphony, a piece which displays all the fingerprints of the composer's most mature work.
