Notes & Reviews:

The Sleeping Beauty is considered Tchaikovsky's greatest ballet, with its illustrative score that includes favourite moments such as the Rose Adagio and the great Sleeping Beauty Waltz. Conductor Barry Wordsworth is one of the UK's foremost ballet conductors, and currently holds the position of Music Director of the Royal Ballet, Covent Garden. This disc completes the set of three Tchaikovsky ballets recorded by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (followingThe Nutcracker and Swan Lake).

A Sparkling Jewel in the Crown of Classical Ballet
Often referred to as Tchaikovsky’s finest ballet score, Sleeping Beauty is undoubtedly gorgeous, spanning three acts and a prologue in majestic, imperial fashion. This recording is arguably the best in current production. Wordsworth is a master in his conducting style; more so than most other recordings, he draws out the majestic crescendos and decrescendos in the style that one would think Tchaikovsky originally intended. The timbre of the piece is warm, sparkling, and lush; every scene glimmers like a panoramic vista of Aurora’s kingdom. The only possible flaw one could find with this stunning and loyally classical approach to the Sleeping Beauty is that, what sounds so resplendent in person, the dramatic dynamics flowing from soft to booming, can be confusing on a home stereo. If you have neighbors, be careful to monitor your volume; portions such as the entrance of the Lilac Fairy’s entourage are charming and soft, while anything involving Carabosse may well blow your speakers off. All in all, this recording should be a requirement for any lover of ballet, Tchaikovsky, or classical music. Wordsworth and his orchestra are brilliant, and lead the listener on an enchanting journey from Prologue to wedding.
