In the New Testament the Lord's Prayer is recorded twice; since the Middle Ages, it has been set to numerous melodies, from Martin Luther's hymn to the variations of Mendelssohn's last organ sonata to the liturgical music of the 19th & 20th centuries. The various interpretations of the text, liturgical melodies and individual traditions are all of equal importance, although it should not be overlooked that they nevertheless have much in common.
