Notes & Reviews:

While Schubert's Moments Musicaux convey a gentle, bittersweet melancholy, Rachmaninoff's cycle is much darker, taking the listener to the depths of despair before rising to a heroic finale. This is pianist Joel Schoenhals' fifth release on Fleur de Son Classics. Of Schoenhals' interpretation of Schubert Lieder transcriptions (FDS 57965), American Record Guide wrote, "Seek this one out and find one of the greatest releases of the year - a perfect marriage of intellect and musicality."

Musical Moments Schubert and Rachmaninov
This is a very fine CD (on the Fleur de Son label) and all the pieces are played excellently by Joel Schoenhals. One doesn't get to hear these "Musical Moments" very often (except for No. 3 of the Schubert, which, in my generation, we learned in elementary school and which has been arranged for a variety of instrumental combinations). I wonder, in case of the Schubert, why one hears the Impromptus played relatively often and these not so frequently. Perhaps it is because they are somewhat more introspective. The "Musical Moments" of Rachmaninov are very interestinand some of them remind me a little of the late piano pieces of Brahms, which is surprising in that they are relatively early works. This CD is a worthwhile addition to one's collection.
