On September 22, 1998, the Staatskapelle Dresden celebrated its 450th anniversary. Founded in 1548 by the Prince Elector Moritz of Saxony, it is not only one of the oldest orchestras in the world with one of the longest traditions, but also probably the only one that has made music continuously for more than four and a half centuries while consistently numbering among the leading ensembles of the time.
