Conductor Ensemble ComposerNotes & Reviews:
Olé Schmidt was born on Copenhagen in 1928. He studied at the city's Royal Conservatoire of Music, where his main courses were in composition, piano, and conducting. After leaving the Conservatoire he continued his conducting studies abroad with Albert Wolfe, Nils Grevilius, Rafael Kubilek, and Celibidache. Schmidt has held titled positions with the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, Royal Danish Opera, Hamburg Symphony and, in the US, with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra. He has appeared with several of Europe's leading orchestras as a guest conductor and worked extensively in Britain with the London Symphony Orchestra. A devotee of contemporary music, Olé Schmidt conducted many premieres while gradually resuming his own composing activities during his productive years at the podium. His own works ranged across several disciplines and involved pieces for symphony orchestra, symphonic wind band, music for classic silent films, and incidental music for radio and television. Schmidt, who died in March 2010, was a larger than life figure known for hosting legendary parties that included many of the great musicians of Europe.
