Nicolai Lysenko:Taras Bulba

Album Summary

>Lysenko, Nikolay : Taras Bulba 'Highlights'
Composer

Notes & Reviews:

Heroic opera Taras Bulba was based on Gogol's well-known story of the same name. After taking the composer ten years to finish, the premiere took place only after the great socialist revolution in October 1924. It has been conceived as a deeply national work, singing of the heroic feat of the people struggling for independence. Konstantin Simeonov (1910-1987) was an outstanding Soviet conductor and the People's Artist of the USSR (1962), who had an illustrious career conducting many of the orchestras of the USSR.

"the energetic direction of Konstantin Semeonov makes a very persuasive case for the work, based on Gogol's novel. It's a heroic, tragic tale that is set to music of considerable individuality...It's easy to see why Tchaikovsky was so struck with the work." -International Record Review

Delightful Ukrainian opera
Nicolai (or Mykola) LYSENKO's opera TARAS BULBA is sheer delight. These generous excerpts, recorded in 1972, give us a good sampling of how Lysenko, having studied with major 19th century Russian composers, also combined Ukrainian folk melody and legend, into what became the "national opera" of the Ukraine. This is a zestful and fun recording, filled with echoes of Cossack and Ukrainian melodies, but also showing the influence of Glinka and other composers.
Years ago, Melodiya also had out a complete issue on LP of Lysenko's other significant opera, NATALKA POLTAVKA. Hopefully, they will see fit to release it, also, on CD.
Then, lastly, S. Gulak-Artemovsky's comic masterpiece, THE COSSACKS IN EXILE BEYOND THE DANUBE (also once available on Melodiya LP) should see re-release. Copies of this and possibly another, more recent performance, have circulated. The work, in some ways, resembles Smetana's THE BARTERED BRIDE, and is just as endearing and delightful.
