Notes & Reviews:

A composer’s written and verbal comments on his own work are invaluable for both the performer and the musicologist. The composer’s own interpretations as a performer of his own works can be taken as more important than written and oral “confessions” are. Kodaly did not train as a performer, and it was at the relatively ripe age of 35, coincident with his Psalmus Hungaricus becoming a world success, that he was persuaded to take up the conductor’s baton - and with a single exception, he felt called upon to conduct only his own works.

Kodaly's Ideas Realized
It is always fascinating to hear the composer conduct his own works, so that we truly know tempos and dynamics which he intended.
