Notes & Reviews:
The Opera Oberst Chabert (Colonel Chabert) premiered in Frankfurt in 1912 and was written by Hermann von Waltershausen when he was just 30 years of age. The 100th stage performance of the opera was held at the Berlin-Charlottenburg Opera (today's German Opera of Berlin), nearly 76 years ago. In 2010, the Opera house paid tribute to this practically forgotten work, reviving it with a prominent cast of vocalists, including Bo Skovhus. The result was a stunning success.
Waltershausen knows his Ring and Elekra but he doesn't ride on their style...CPO presents a live recording from what the booklet shows to be a semi-staging at the Deutsche Oper...Everyone deserves credit, but the piece itself deserves a full staging.
