Ignaz Pleyel's grand total of 50 piano trios occupies a central place in his rich oeuvre - hardly surprising given he was a pupil of Joseph Haydn and later his friend. The Trio 1790 ensemble, whose critically acclaimed complete edition of Haydn's piano trios currently comprises 9 CPO CDs (soon will be released in a box set), now interprets 4 of Pleyel's trios - of course on historical instruments. Galant melody, dramatic harmony, and tonal surprises contribute to the appeal of Pleyel's works.

In these trios the keyboard has the lead, and Harald Hoeren takes it. His dynamically differentiated playing is a joy to listen to. Annette Wehner is an excellent violinist with a beautiful tone, blending perfectly with the keyboard. The solo episodes are very well executed.
