All Music Guide - Patsy Morita
It seems that no matter what music Juana Zayas puts under her hands, it comes out extremely confident and nearly always smiling. Soirée Italienne is a program of works by Italian composers and works influenced by Italian music, from the Baroque to the Romantic eras. From the first of the dozen Domenico Scarlatti sonatas, Zayas' skillful technique is impeccable and obvious. On top of that is a sense of musicality that infuses each piece or movement by means of astutely shaped phrasing. On its surface Scarlatti's Sonata in F major, K. 17, is a relatively sparse composition: not much melody, mostly scalar, not too much interaction between hands, typically even and steady rhythms. Zayas adds touches of rubato and echoing dynamics to create something of a miniature Baroque ballet for solo dancer. Fanfare-like sounds permeate several of the Scarlatti selections and, naturally, Bach's Italian Concerto, particularly its finale. The second movement of that concerto is the one place where one might expect a melancholy mood, but Zayas is philosophical and reflective, not resigned.

In a similar way, the Busoni transcription of the Bach chorale prelude that ends the two-disc set is shaded with majesty. The Clementi sonata is light, agile, and crisp, if frenetic at times. The same briskness is in La chasse, the Liszt transcription of the Paganini etude. Zayas' sureness underpins the passion of the Chopin selections and makes the Tarantelle almost as rollicking as it can be in its highly stylized guise. The one, tiny criticism of the whole program is the solid block of Scarlatti at the opening. As pleasing as it is to hear Scarlatti played so adeptly on the modern piano, the choices could have been even more broadly selected for greater contrast of tempo or humor, or they could have been interspersed with other works. Regardless, Zayas shares another album of her outstanding musicianship with listeners.
