Notes & Reviews:
This witty and poignant chamber opera was commissioned by Almeida Opera and first performed by them - to both success and scandal - in 1995. The story tells the glamorous rise and seedy fall of Margaret, the Duchess of Argyll. According to Paul Griffiths, Adès's score, with its allusions to cabaret, to Kurt Weill and Alban Berg, is 'the music of the future', written by one who has 'the panache of a great opera composer'.
BBC Music Magazine
This mordant satire on the decline and fall of the Duchess of Argyll would be twice as incisive at half the length. But it is unlikely to be better done than here.
Recording information: Rosslyn Hill Chapel, London (12/20/1995).
