With the accession to the throne of Frederic II of Brandenburg-Bayreuth and his spouse Wilhelmine of Prussia (the sister of Frederic the Great), the small kingdom of Bayreuth experienced a brief period of cultural blossoming. As an enthusiastic musician, Wilhelmine was able to gain Johann Pfeiffer (1697-1761) for her court in 1734, an excellent musician whose compositions have only remained virtually unknown in subsequent eras because such a substantial number of his works were considered to have been lost or destroyed. The current selection by the Batzdorfer Hofkapelle draws attention to this unjustly neglected composer from the Late Baroque period who skillfully integrated Italian elements into his music.
