Notes & Reviews:
The new production of the Opera "Lear" by Reimann (1978) was a high point in the recent history of the Frankfurt Opera and wonderful preparation for staging a genuine Reimann premiere at the opera house in Frankfurt. The opera "Medea", has a libretto written by the composer, based on text by Franz Grillparzer's and was created for the Vienna State Opera. The Viennese premiere took place in February 2010. Six months later, the curtain went up on the German premiere at the Frankfurt Opera.
"In comparison with the earlier operas, the textures are pared down, and the orchestral forces used with greater restraint: jaggedly expressive vocal lines are underpinned with just a single instrument or a veil of strings. Yet Reimann's sense of dramatic pacing is now so acute that the lack of weight is never noticed; even if it's not always clear what Reimann's music is adding, the mix is powerfully effective, and this recording, taken from the production in Frankfurt last autumn, in which Claudia Barainsky is outstanding in the title role, conveys a real sense of its theatrical impact." -The Guardian
Reimann has written a very transparent, and often delicate orchestral parts that connect to the expressiveness of the voices with instruments very well. He shows masterful sense of drama and Personenpsychographie. Claudia sings the title role Barainsky quite gorgeous. Their partners are reliable and the orchestra plays very committed.
Reimann uses his large orchestra with restraint, so the singers are never overwhelmed. His reticence in using the strings in anything like a conventional melodic manner makes their occasional bursts of lyricism all the more striking... .visually stunning production; the potent images make it easy to imagine that the opera made an especially gripping impression in the theater. The soloists are all top-notch singing actors... Erik Nielsen leads the Frankfurter Opern- und Museumsorchester in a taut, focused, and utterly secure performance of the challenging score. The sound of the live recording is full, very well-balanced, and mostly clean.
